Criminally Good Day Event – In Association with Essex Book Festival

Join us at High House on 11th June for a range of free events related to the Essex Book Festival, featuring local authors and talks relating to High House history.

When: Saturday 11th June, 10:00 am – 5:00 am.

Where: High House Production Park, Vellacott Close, Purfleet-on-Thames, Essex, RM19 1RJ

Our “Criminally Good Day” event at High House includes a wide range of guest speakers, workshops, and storytelling from renowned authors and historians educating visitors on their craft and High House history.

The event will also feature the “Midnight Robber”, a giant skeleton puppet roaming the grounds of High House, an Earthling Tent, in partnership with Thurrock Library, where you can learn about the issues relating to Earth’s climate, tree planting with local author Ray Starr, a book giveaway, a huge silk-screen flag display by Kinetika, heritage tours from a Dracula expert, and a workshop by the Essex Police Museum.

We’ll have members of the High House Community Group on hand to guide you around the historic site and tell stories about High House history, as well as collect stories from visitors who have lived or worked at High House in the past.

You’re also welcome to bring along a picnic to enjoy in the beautiful grounds of High House on what we hope to be a beautiful sunny day.

Children’s Events

11:00 am – Fun Stories from Far Away

This event is hosted by Sade Fadipe and features storytelling in claps, rhymes and rhythms, with arts and craft activities too, for ages 4+.

2:00 pm – Heroes and Villains

This event is hosted by Emily Kenny and is a jam-packed writing workshop to discover some cunning writing secrets, for ages 8-12.

3:30 pm – Once Upon a Story…

This event is hosted by Catherine Emmett where your children can learn the key ingredients for their own story writing, for ages 7-11.

Author Events

11:00 am – Exploring the dark side…

This event is hosted by Fiona Cummins and Holly Seddon where they discuss how to write dangerously dark fiction that still has heart and finds fresh ways to kill people… in a strictly literary sense!

1:30 pm – The Bad Sister and The Wedding Murders

This event is hosted by J.A. Corrigan and Sarah Linley where you’ll hear from two exciting new crime fiction writers as they discuss their gripping new novels.

3:30 pm  – Say Her Name

This event is hosted by Dreda Say Mitchell and Ryan Carter where you’ll hear about their latest book “Say Her Name”. Authors who Lee Child describes as “Britain’s finest crime fiction writer”.

Writing Workshops

10:00 am – Story is King

This workshop is hosted by J.A. Corrigan and explores the fundamental principles of Story and Plat.

12:00 pm – How to Build a Baddie

This workshop is hosted by Syd Moore where you’ll find out what makes fictional villains tick.

1:45 pm – Creating a Bookish Podcast on a Shoestring

This workshop is hosted by Holly Seddon, creator of the popular “The Honest Authors” Podcast, who will give you a whistle-stop tour of how to set up, record, and promote your own podcast.

3.30 pm Crime Writing for Beginners

This workshop is hosted by Alex Clare and in this interactive session, you’ll start with a blank page and leave with a plot outline ready to be written.
